Alert - Chapter 35 Recipients
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) experienced a software issue that has hindered the processing of Dependents’ Educational Assistance payments. This issue happened in September prior to the federal government shutdown and affected more than 75,000 students nationwide.
Due to the government shutdown, the personnel able to resolve this issue have been furloughed. The VA has brought in additional people to help manually process these payments, and they expect to have the backlogged payments completed by early December.
The Office of Veteran Affairs at K-State is working with other campus offices to help students who are being impacted by this issue. If you are experiencing financial hardship due to this issue and/or it is affecting your Spring 2026 enrollment, we encourage you to complete the Office of Student Financial Assistance’s Emergency Referral Application. Note that you are a Chapter 35 recipient and how the government shutdown has impacted your financial situation.
If you are using another benefit chapter and have experienced a partial amount or a delay in your payment, please call the VA at 800-827-1000. Option 2 will connect you to the direct deposit representatives who can see where your payment is in the process. You may need your sponsor’s information such as full name, date of birth, social security number and branch of service.
The VA’s Contingency Planning webpage contains information about what is impacted and not impacted by the current government shutdown.
