Fox Red Curly Sedge, Carex buchananii

Example of Fox Red Curly Sedge

Full Sun, Cool-Season

‘This sedge really stands out with its curly red/bronze foliage. It adds a great deal of color and texture to a landscape. Touted as “deer resistant” (we will see!) it could be a good fit for Kansas conditions. It is a good plant for winter interest, a unique trait among the sedges.

These plants all overwintered in the trial grounds, though some had better vigor than others. No deer damage observed (but only one out the 100 species seemed to have any trouble with deer in the trial, so it doesn’t seem to be problem with most ornamental grasses to begin with).
