Submitted by Danielle Schapaugh

Students, faculty, and community members are invited to attend a lecture with Southern Cheyenne artist Edgar Heap of Birds at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in 109 Justin Hall.

Heap of Birds’ lecture, "Heads Above Grass; Provocative Native American Public art and Studio Fine Art Practice," will showcase politically charged, community based, public art deployments throughout the U.S. and Europe which articulate current day struggles of Indian peoples for social justice. The talk also will present studio art created to explore personal freedoms and the investigation of self.

Heap of Birds has taught Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma since 1988 and has served as a visiting professor at Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of Cape Town. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Gallery of Canada and the Museum of Contemporary art in Australia, and he has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation among others.

This lecture is sponsored by the departments of history, American ethnic studies, art, English, and sociology, anthropology and social work as well as the College of Arts and Sciences, the university provost, K-State Libraries and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.
