Denim Day Resource Fair today

Submitted by Shawn Funk

The Morrison Family Center for Student Well-being in partnership with the Office of Institutional Equity will host a resource fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the K-State Student Union courtyard in observation of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to visit the fair to learn more about campus organizations who can offer direct support and services to those who may have experienced violence or other difficult circumstances. Linc the therapy dog from Lafene Health Center will also be present to provide comfort and engagement.

Denim Day first began in 1999 in response to an Italian court case in which an 18-year-old survivor was raped by a 45-year-old driving instructor. Ultimately, the Italian High Court overturned the rape conviction based on the claim that because the survivor was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault, it would have been "impossible" for the rapist to remove the survivor's jeans without her compliance.

Everyone is encouraged to wear denim on the day of the fair and on April 24, the national date of observance, to demonstrate support for survivors of sexual violence.
