Wildcat 91.9 celebrates 75 years of excellence

Submitted by Hailey Case

75 Years of KSDB

March 19 marks a significant occasion for Wildcat 91.9 as it celebrates 75 years as the longest continually running FM station in the country. This year, Wildcat 91.9 is not only commemorating its historic milestone but also shining a spotlight on what makes the student-run radio station special.

Wildcat 91.9 began as an experiment on the third floor of Nichols Gymnasium in 1949, and it eventually evolved into a non-commercial radio station broadcasting on 91.9 MHz on the FM dial. Staffed exclusively by students at Kansas State University, Wildcat 91.9 provides valuable experience in all areas of radio broadcasting and plays a diverse range of music genres, from new alternative to hip-hop, along with local specialty programming.

Over the years, Wildcat 91.9 has been a beacon of excellence, fostering creativity, expression and inclusivity within the university community. Under the leadership of former Chief Operator Ian Punnett, the station underwent transformative changes, including the adoption of the slogan "You Belong," signifying its commitment to providing a welcoming space for everyone. With diverse programming covering pop culture shows, country music, Dungeons and Dragons, sports updates, and weather forecasts, Wildcat 91.9 offers something for everyone.

As Wildcat 91.9 celebrates its 75th anniversary, it invites alumni, faculty and students to join in the celebration under the theme "75 Years of ______." Alumni, faculty and students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and fill in the blank with what Wildcat 91.9 means to them. Whether it's memories of hosting shows, discovering new music or finding a sense of belonging, the station's legacy lives on through the stories of those it has touched. Wildcat 91.9 alumni can email wildcat919@k-state.edu to share their stories and experiences.
