Timothy Durrett to present Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Seminar

Submitted by Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics

Timothy Durrett, professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at Kansas State University, will be the featured speaker for this week's Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Seminar. Durrett will present "Defining and manipulating metabolic pathways to improve seed composition" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in 120 Ackert Hall.

Seeds from different crops represent an important source of oil, protein and carbohydrate for food and feed. Durrett will describe different projects from his lab aimed at understanding and manipulating metabolic pathways important to producing oil and protein. This work includes using synthetic biology to achieve the complete remodeling of seed oil production to produce novel molecules useful for different applications, as well as a project that explores the flux of polyunsaturated fatty acids in oil production. Durrett will also discuss efforts to enhance oil production and improve amino acid composition in soybean seeds.
