APDesign gallery features exhibit on Franklin Park in Boston

Submitted by Thom Jackson

Franklin Park Exhibit, Cassias Gallery

Now being featured in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design, or APDesign, Cassias Gallery in Regnier Hall is a new exhibit on Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The exhibit,"Franklin Park: Olmsted's Crown Jewel | Revealing the Past, Present, and Future of the park" will run through April 28.

In fall 2022, APDesign's Jessica Canfield, associate professor in the department of landscape architecture & regional and community planning Master's Project Studio, examined Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts, exploring how urban park planning, design and programming can more equitably and inclusively serve a diverse public. Students undertook a case study of the park, investigating its history, current condition and future potential.

In September, students traveled to Boston to meet with design professionals and authors of The Franklin Park Action Plan and to conduct individual site observations and analyses at Franklin Park. The outcomes of the students' collective work served as a foundation for this exhibition and for their individual master's projects, which sought to be evocative and aspirational yet pragmatic and informed by evidence.

The exhibit was created by landscape architecture graduate students Katherine Herrera, John Kalamaja, Caleb Payne, Anna Rader and Emily Siler.

Gratitude to Ian Scherling, '09, Master of Landscape Architecture, landscape architect and senior associate at Sasaki, for providing students with critical dialogue and project review. The studio was supported by the Susan and Paul Kissinger Award, which was established by Paul Kissinger, '89, Master of Landscape Architecture, and the late Susan Kissinger in 2018. The goal of the philanthropic support is to bridge the gap between professional industry and the learning environment by supporting students, faculty/staff and outside professionals to promote exposure and collaboration with the design and planning industry.
