K-State has multiple presenters at NACADA annual conference

K-State faculty members and administrators, along with several doctoral students in the College of Education's Leadership in Academic Advising program, presented at NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising's annual conference both virtually and in Portland, Oct. 23-26.

NACADA is hosted by the College of Education and is the world's premier association for academic advising.

Jeannie Brown Leonard, K-State vice provost for student success; Karen Sullivan-Vance, NACADA associate director for strategic program development; and Melinda J. Anderson, NACADA executive director and teaching professor, co-presented the preconference workshop "Holistic Student Success by Design."

In addition, Anderson co-presented "Changing Times in Academic Advising: A Discussion with Advising Administrators" and participated in "Podcast Live! Lessons Learned from Advising Administrators: Innovative Approaches to Managing Change."

Doris Carroll, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, presented "Supporting Multiracial Advises by Strengthening Advisor Social Advocacy."

F. Janelle Hannah Jefferson, NACADA Executive Office, and Sean Bridgen, NACADA associate director for external and institutional partnerships, co-presented "What Really Matters: Centering Student Goals in Holistic Advising Redesign."

Michelle Kenny, doctoral student, co-presented "A Different Perspective: New Advisor Recruiting, Onboarding, and Thriving."

Craig McGill, assistant professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, co-presented: 

  • "Primary-Role Advisors' Perceptions of Advising Career Ladders."
  • "Ontario Academic Advisors' Perspectives of Professional Development and Advising Practice."
  • "Developing Career Ladders in Academic Advising: Research & Practice."

Shawntae Mintline, doctoral student, presented "Advising for Math Equity: Identifying & Dismantling Math Barriers in Higher Ed." Mintline also moderated two panel discussions.

Lisa Rubin, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, presented "Developing 'NACADA Journal' Authors: Voices from the Field."

Doctoral students Billie Streufert and Laurie Baker co-presented "The Cost(s) of College: Financial and Career Conversations in Academic Advising Meetings" with Wendy Troxel, director, NACADA Center for Research.

Streufert also co-presented:

  • "Bridging Past and Future Career Goals: Adaptability, Parallel Planning, and Advising" with NACADA President Kyle Ross.
  • "Becoming Bridge Builders Through Culturally Engaged Career Advising."

Doctoral students Michelle Maller, Helena Cole, Chloe Wurst, Billie Streufert and Laurie Baker with McGill co-presented "The Duality of Advising: Through the Lens of Lowenstein's Future of Advising."

Wendy Troxel co-presented "Building Bridges: Capturing Stories of Academic Advising During COVID-19."

Sullivan-Vance co-presented "Building Bridges Between Advisors and Faculty: Inspiring a Culture of Excellence in Faculty Advising."

Leticia Wilson, doctoral student, co-presented "You're Hired!: Developing a Personal Board of Directors to Optimize Advisor & Student Success."
