Physics Machine Shop available to university departments

Submitted by Kim Coy

The K-State physics department introduces its Physics Machine Shop, a department-managed facility specializing in engineering, design and new construction, as well as recondition or repair services. The shop is available for your on- and off-campus needs.

The Physics Machine Shop prides itself on its ability to perform jobs with the people, experience and machining skills that allow it to work with campus clients from product design and prototype through production by providing expertise at all levels to ensure a quality product. Clients do not need to bring expert-level designs to the Physics Machine Shop, nor do they need to have expert knowledge of mechanical fabrication to benefit from the shop's work.

The shop manager, Andy Thurlow, said the shop is a single source for all your needs.

"We have produced a multitude of items ranging from teaching tools to scientific apparatus," Thurlow said.

The shop has fabricated, machined and assembled these products with the tools and people it has in place to bring its customers' visions to life.

Recent projects that the Physics Machine Shop has delivered to clients include many scientific apparatuses for colleges and departments across the university, including mechanical engineering, Veterinary Medicine, kinesiology, grain science and the Division of Facilities, to name a few. Custom devices ranging from precision optical mounts to Plexiglass desk guards have been built for the James R. Macdonald Laboratory and the physics department.

Contact the Physics Machine Shop at 785-532-1631 or email Thurlow at athurlow@phys.ksu.edu to set up an appointment and discover what the shop can offer to meet your needs. The Physics Machine Shop is in the basement of Cardwell Hall, Room 53A, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
