Today: K-State Cancer Research Week open house

Submitted by Sherry Fleming

The Johnson Cancer Research Center is hosting the 2022 K-State Cancer Research Week Sept. 12-17.

On Monday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., guests have the opportunity to visit the cancer research labs at K-State. Guests will see how research labs are different than clinical labs and might be able to catch a scientist in action. Maps will be available at the Johnson Cancer Research Center and directional signage will be posted.

During the open house, the labs that will be open to visitors will have faculty and graduate students who can explain what happens in the lab. Some of the work that can be seen includes treatments for breast and lung cancers, creation of new chemicals for the treatment of pancreatic cancer and more.

The open house will feature a new patented microwave probe that limits damage done by radiation in cancer treatment and the new NMR machine. The NMR machine looks at parts of the atom — carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, etc., in a molecule to find areas that treatment could target.
