K-State Salina Enactus team advances to national competition, receives award

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Kansas State University Salina's Enactus team is advancing to the national competition by claiming a regional championship April 10 in Dallas, Texas.

At the regional competition, one of 10 conducted across the United States in March and April, the K-State Salina team also was named a 4.0 Award recipient and recognized as an Enactus 4.0 Club. The honors are awarded to chapters for quality education programs, success in Enactus and long-term sustainability in enabling progress through entrepreneurial action. Award recipients are determined by an index that evaluates faculty adviser quality, administrative support quality, student leaders' success, program success, financial stability, community engagement, participation in Enactus events and competitive initiatives, and competition results. Recipients are also teams that have earned a 4.0 or higher in competitions on a 5.0 scale.

During this academic year, the team organized three projects in the Salina community, including partnering with Walgreens to host the Superhero Showdown, an event that promoted health and wellness for children; partnering with Ashby House, inviting local women business leaders to host empowerment workshops for women at the Ashby House using a Wal-Mart Women's Economic Empowerment grant; and partnering with OCCK and Lowes for a new accessible bus stop and bench for CityGo bus service.

K-State Salina is home to one of more than 500 Enactus programs in the United States. Participating students use business concepts to develop community outreach projects, transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.

As a regional champion, the team advances to the 2013 Enactus U.S. National Exposition in Kansas City, Mo., May 21-23. At Enactus competitions, teams present the results of their projects for evaluation by business leaders serving as judges.

Students competing at the regional competition include:

Miguel Lopez, sophomore in professional pilot, Dodge City.

From out of state: Tyler Lewis, junior in airport management, Aurora, Colo.; Mar'Quis Hubert, sophomore in personal financial planning, Washington, D.C.; Daison Batangan, sophomore in professional pilot, Waipahu, Hawaii; and Derek Marcuson, junior in aviation maintenance, Nixa, Mo.
