College of Education to host 2022 Rural Education Summit

Submitted by Sarah Harper

The Rural Education Center at the Kansas State University College of Education will host a virtual Rural Education Summit on Friday, April 1, with the theme "Revitalizing Rural Schools."

The half-day virtual program includes speakers from across the nation, including a keynote address from Ben Winchester, a rural sociologist from the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality. His presentation, "Rewriting the Rural Narrative," challenges the deficit framework in which rural communities are commonly discussed. Winchester was a favorite speaker at the National Forum to Advance Rural Education last fall. Read more information about Winchester and his work.

Those attending will be able to choose from more than 20 different breakout sessions led by a variety of speakers. Among those will be national leaders in rural education, rural Kansas school district administrators and teachers, faculty from several universities who specialize in research related to rural education, the Kansas Department of Education, and industry partners.

Registration is open nationwide, and the fee of $10 is designed to encourage several individuals from a district to attend. Register at 2022 Rural Summit.

This is the third year for the Rural Summit, designed as an event where rural educators and community members can meet to hear about various rural projects and gain valuable perspectives from other rural stakeholders.
