The New York Times workshops: Using The New York Times as an educational resource for students

Kathleen O’Connell, national education director of The New York Times, will be on campus next week offering two workshops on The New York Times in College online educational resource: The New York Times in the First Year and The New York Times in Leadership.  Designed in collaboration with scholars and instructors, The New York Times online resource supports classroom efforts to develop students’ knowledge, competencies and skills while enhancing engagement outside the classroom.

Both workshops will be Tuesday, April 16, in 247 Leadership Studies Building. They will be:

  • The New York Times in Leadership, 9:30-11 a.m.
  • The New York Times in the First Year, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Mary Tolar, director of the School of Leadership Studies, consults on The New York Times in Leadership project, and began contributing Daily Article selections last fall.

"Alternating with a colleague in Pennsylvania, I read The Times every morning, select an article, and develop a set of questions instructors may use to facilitate leadership learning relevant to the article, linking also to other news and scholarly articles," Tolar said.

The articles and questions are archived and tagged by topic, creating a rich and diverse resource for instructors.

“Students report that they enjoy engaging in real-time application of course content, which speaks to their call for relevance in their education," Tolar said. "I appreciate the critical thinking it requires and both the civic and learning engagement I witness in class."

The Daily Article is one of several components of the online resource.

The workshops will demonstrate specific instructional strategies learned from those in the field on how to integrate The New York Times into First Year Experience, Leadership Studies, and related courses and programs.

Snacks/lunch provided. If interested in attending, please RSVP to Dorothy Smith by calling 785-532-0133 or dorothy@k-state.edu by Friday, April 12.
