President of Black & Veatch's global water business to speak about resilient water future

Submitted by Trisha Brown

Cindy Wallis-Lage, president of Black & Veatch's global water business and a member of the company's executive committee and board of directors, will deliver the inaugural Environmental Engineering Lecture as part of the Civil Engineering Graduate Seminar Invited Lecture Series at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in Fiedler Hall Auditorium, DUF 1107. A speaker reception for her election to the National Academy of Engineering will follow in the Engineering Hall ground-floor atrium.

Current water infrastructure problems are often approached through siloed solutions to address a singular service: water supply, pollution control and stormwater diversion. While appropriate for the time developed, the changes in external and connected pressures require a new road map. Wallis-Lage will discuss the need for achieving infrastructure resilience to manage and mitigate the impacts of climate change, population growth, aging infrastructure, as well as economic and societal movements. This resilience is predicated on One Water thinking. One Water values every drop and recognizes all water as a valuable resource integrated into a holistic planning process to deliver sustainable communities.

The event is co-hosted with the Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and environmental engineering undergraduate program.
