Primary texts Swogger Scholarship call for applicants for fall 2021

Submitted by Camryn Eberhardy

K-State's primary texts certificate program is now accepting applications for a second Swogger Scholarship for the fall 2021 semester.

The $1,000 scholarship has been established in honor of Glenn and Claire Swogger whose Redbud Foundation is a major supporter of K-State's primary texts certificate. The Swoggers' commitment to primary texts education at K-State has made possible the program's core course, DAS 300: Primary Texts Core Course, and many other benefits, including the Live Ideas Undergraduate Journal and Live Ideas Institutes. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote undergraduate research and engagement using primary texts. The program will help students with the goal of presenting and potentially publishing any work that may result from the scholarship.

Three options:

To apply for the scholarship a student must be enrolled in the primary texts certificate program. Students who obtain the scholarship will be enrolled for a primary texts-qualifying course — DAS 300 especially encouraged; or 2) develop a written work they have already undertaken for potential presentation or publication under the supervision of Laurie Johnson. The revision should entail a significant use of primary texts (Students who do not have a paper already composed can still apply by submitting a proposal for a paper they would like to write), or 3) plan to enroll in an educational experience at home or abroad, including online classes at K-State and elsewhere, in which they will be studying primary texts.

As a part of their application, students seeking the first option should show enrollment in the primary texts class of their choice. If students are taking the second option, they should describe the paper or other work they wish to develop and attach a cover letter discussing their project. They should include a proposed deadline for completing any written work, and any ideas they have for publication/presentation, including submitting to K-State's Live Ideas Undergraduate Journal. Students pursuing the third option should show acceptance into the educational experience and a description of it that shows the use of primary texts.

Subsequent development of any written work with option 2 will take place under the guidance of the program director within the confines of one semester. Receiving academic credit for this work is an option. Scholarship papers accepted as a result of the process of option 2 can be subsequently used to fulfill the capstone requirement for the program. Students seeking a scholarship are encouraged to contact Johnson at lauriej@k-state.edu before applying if they have any questions. All application materials are due by email to lauriej@k-state.edu by Oct. 15.
