Nathan Hein, third-year doctoral student from the Crop EcoPhysiology Lab in the agronomy department, has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 North American Plant Phenotyping Network Graduate Student Award.

The network selects a single awardee per year and Hein received the award for his extraordinarily high productivity in research, publications, and outreach efforts which impressed the committee.

The North American Plant Phenotyping Network annual conference was conducted virtually Feb. 15-19 and Hein was presented with his award at the closing ceremonies on Feb. 19. Hein has continued to increase his impact in the network year after year through conference poster presentations and presenting his work on high nighttime temperature stress on winter wheat in an invited oral presentation at last year's conference. As a result of being selected as the Graduate Student Award winner, Hein will be invited to give a keynote presentation at the network's 2022 annual conference alongside the network's Early Career Award winner.

Hein's research focuses on two areas: enhancing heat stress resilience and developing sensor-based tools to improve nitrogen use efficiency in crops.
