Counseling Services offers online group therapy to K-State students

Submitted by Cristine Glendening

Counseling Services offers group therapy to all K-State students each semester. Group therapy is the preferred option for students who want to better understand themselves and how they relate to and impact others.

Group therapy is one way to address relationship concerns, including difficulty saying "no," not opening up to others out of concern for being a burden or being judged, feeling alone or isolated, feeling anxious in social situations, and more. It also can be helpful for concerns such as depression, anxiety, adjusting to college, and a better understanding of yourself and your emotions.

There is no cost to students for group therapy.

To learn how to join a therapy group, contact Counseling Services at 785-532-6927. All groups are facilitated online to K-State students who are located in the state of Kansas at the time of service due to therapy license restrictions.

Spring 2021 group offerings:

Graduate and Nontraditional Students Group — for those seeking support and feedback as graduate or nontraditional students.

Understanding Self and Others — open to all students interested in improving their self-understanding and relationships with others.

Spectrum — for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+; a place to seek support and increase self-acceptance.

Calming the Storm — for students wanting to build coping and communication skills.

Taming Your Anxious Mind — for students who want to learn about anxiety and its purpose as well as skills to manage anxiety. Practicing skills between sessions will be crucial to making progress in this group.

Living with Loss — for students who may be feeling isolated in their grief; providing a safe supportive space to talk about death and loss with other K-State students who have had similar experiences. Members will learn what to expect from the grief process and ways to cope and heal.

Restoration Journey — for students who want to learn more about symptoms of trauma and how that impacts their current functioning. It provides psychoeducation regarding safety, awareness of the impact of trauma on emotions and thoughts, and the physical impact from stress and how trauma can impact health and relationships.
