Starting today: The Konza Student Table serves free weekly, nutritious meals to students every Wednesday

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

To help fight food insecurity among K-State students, two community organizations have joined together to sponsor The Konza Student Table, a free, tasty and nutritious meal every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., starting Sept. 9, in the St. Isidore's Catholic Student Center parking lot, 711 Denison Ave., near the southwest corner of campus.

All K-State students and their immediate families are welcome to walk up or drive by for their no-contact delivery meal. The Konza Student Table is sponsored by St. Isidore's Catholic Student Center and The Food and Farm Council of Riley County and Manhattan. Lacy's Fresh Fare and Catering, a student-run service through K-State's hospitality management department, is the program caterer.

On the menu for Sept. 9 will be lemon pepper chicken, rice pilaf and bistro vegetables. Some vegetarian meals will be available. The meal is cold-packed and just needs to be reheated to serve. A brown bag to-go breakfast will also be handed out and will contain two oatmeal packets, yogurt and an apple or orange.

"We know financial resources are tight for many students and we know they may find themselves short on cash for food," said Vickie James, coordinator for the Food and Farm Table in Riley County and Manhattan. "It's difficult to study — or do anything — when you're hungry. That's why we are sponsoring The Konza Student Table, because no human being can experience a full life on an empty stomach. Your help in spreading the word to students about the free meal is appreciated."

"It is so heartening to see the community pull together and create a site of generosity that will benefit K-State students' well-being," said Sarah Hoyt, operations lead at Cats' Cupboard, the K-State food pantry. "I know many Cats' Cupboard visitors who will be thrilled to learn about this additional community resource."
