February brings sesquicentennial, popular shows, special presentations to campus

Special performances honoring Kansas State University's 150th anniversary, shows based on the popular movies "Shrek" and "Drumline," a variety of art exhibitions and workshops, and musical performances by student, faculty and guest ensembles make February a month to enjoy the arts at the university.
The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the university's McCain Performance Series; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:
* The exhibition "Konza: Sculpture by John Douglas Powers" is on display through July at the Beach Museum of Art. Powers' kinetic sculpture, which evokes the Konza Prairie near Manhattan, is constructed from brass, aluminum and stainless steel.
* An ARTSmart class for children ages 4-5 will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Based on the "Museum of Wonder" exhibition, children will explore the wonder and variety of the visual world through the university's many collections. The class costs $3 per child or $1.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum members. Reservations are required; call 785-532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cancellation notice is requested to serve those on the waiting list.
* The McCain Performance Series presents Sweet Honey In The Rock, an internationally renowned and Grammy-nominated African-American a cappella ensemble, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets are $14-$55 plus applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, by calling 785-532-6428 or online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain/.
* The Beach Museum's annual Family Valentine Workshop will be 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3. All the lace, ribbon and bling needed to create handmade valentines will be supplied, as well as refreshments. The cost is $5 per child or $3 for museum members. Reservations are not required, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
* Faculty and students will present a "Women in Music" recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in All Faiths Chapel auditorium.
* The Early Expressions Children's Art Display will be available Feb. 6-10 in the Beach Museum's UMB Theater. The program is sponsored by the Manhattan-Ogden Public School Foundation. An open house reception for the display will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
* It's Homeschool Tuesday at the Beach Museum Art from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5. Classes will explore the university collections in the "Museum of Wonder" exhibition. The cost is $3 per child, or $1.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum of Art members. Reservations are required; call 785-532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cancellation notice is requested to serve those on the waiting list.
* Meet the Music, sponsored by the university's music program and the Beach Museum of Art, will feature a student vocal performance at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the UMB Theater foyer.
* K-State Theatre will present the play "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7-9 and 14-16 and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in Nichols Theatre. Tickets cost $8-$14 plus applicable taxes and fees. * "DRUMLine Live," based on the hit movie "Drumline," will bring show-style marching bands to the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in McCain Auditorium. * Wildcat Oboe Day will be Saturday, Feb. 9, with a final concert at 5 p.m. in 204 McCain Auditorium. The event is coordinated by Nora Lewis, assistant professor of oboe.
* Enjoy the talents of Kansas State University music, dance and theatre students at the annual McCain Student Showcase, 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in McCain Auditorium. * In honor of the university's sesquicentennial celebration, the Beach Museum of Art is offering the collaborative, interdisciplinary exhibition the "Museum of Wonder" from Feb. 12-Oct. 12. The exhibition, in the Pelton and Hyle Family Galleries, showcases artifacts from numerous departments and celebrates the university's land-grant heritage. An opening reception will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the museum. It is open to the public and a cash bar will be available.
* Based on the hilarious hit movie about everyone's favorite ogre, "Shrek The Musical" comes to the McCain Auditorium stage at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. Tickets for this McCain Performance Series event cost $24-59 plus applicable taxes and fees. * The K-State Marching Band and K-State Orchestra will be featured in a concert Thursday, Feb. 14, celebrating Kansas State University's 150th anniversary. The concert starts at 4 p.m. in Ahearn Field House. The band is directed by Frank Tracz, professor of music, and the orchestra is directed by David Littrell, university distinguished professor of music.
* The General Student Recital will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in All Faiths Chapel auditorium. This hour-long performance will feature students from the music program's wind, percussion, string, keyboard and voice divisions.
* Multiple faculty artists will perform at the annual "Celebrating New Music" concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in All Faiths Chapel auditorium. A highlight of the program will be Jennifer Higdon's "Zaka," written for the well-known contemporary ensemble, eighth blackbird.
* Accomplished composer of ballet, vocal, choral, piano, musical theatre and opera works, Ricky Ian Gordon, is the guest clinician for the 2013 Kansas National Association of Teachers of Singing Winter Workshop, which will be Friday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16, on campus. Friday's events will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 227 of the K-State Student Union and from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Union's Little Theatre. They include Gordon discussing with vocal and composition students the joys and challenges that come with each new composition. Student members of the National Association of Teachers of Singing will sing some of Gordon's compositions for him. A teacher workshop for association members will be Feb. 16 in the Little Theatre.
* The university's Wind Ensemble, directed by Frank Tracz, professor of music and director of bands, and the Blue Valley Northwest High School wind ensemble, conducted by John Selzer, will share a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in McCain Auditorium. University faculty soloists at the concert will include Karen Large, assistant professor of flute, and Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of tuba.
* The Joe Goode Performance Group will present the modern theater program "The Rambler" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at McCain Auditorium. A part of the McCain Performance Series, tickets cost $13.50-$55 plus applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, by calling 785-532-6428 or online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain/. Parental guidance is suggested, as some material may not be suitable for children.

The class schedule is: all ages, 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, and Wednesday, Jan. 30; toddlers and 2-year-olds, 10:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27; 2- and 3-year-olds, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28; school-age kids, kindergarten and up, 4:15-5:15 Feb. 28; and 4- and 5-year olds, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, March 1. * Soprano Amy Rosine, assistant professor of voice, will present a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday Feb. 28, in All Faiths Chapel auditorium.
* Ebony Theatre will present the play "Jar the Floor" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28-March 2 and 2:30 p.m. March 3 at the Purple Masque Theatre in East Stadium.
