Coronavirus update from Lafene Health Center

Submitted by Lafene Health Center

Lafene Health Center continues to monitor the status of the novel coronavirus, now officially called COVID-19. There are no positive or confirmed cases in Kansas. The university has initiated meetings of the Infectious Disease Advisory Committee to ensure appropriate planning and response in collaboration with Riley County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The confirmation that person-to-person spread with this virus is occurring in Asia raises the level of concern about this virus, but the CDC continues to believe the risk of novel coronavirus to the American public remains low at this time. Coronavirus has not been found to be spreading in the United States, so there are no additional precautions recommended for the public to take. Although additional cases are occurring in the United States, all have been directly linked to recent travel from China.

Remember to take everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of all respiratory viruses.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The CDC is updating its website daily with the latest information and advice for the public. If you feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, and have traveled to China or were in close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the 14 days before you began to feel sick, call Lafene Health Center at 785-532-6544 and ask to speak to a nurse about your recent travel, your symptoms, or other questions.
