Advisor Forum presents October Charlie Award

Submitted by Beth Stuewe

The K-State Advisor Forum has selected Sara Boro, Education Abroad advisor and incoming exchange student coordinator, for the October Charlie Award.

Brent Holliday, assistant director of education abroad, nominated Boro for this award because of the phenomenal work she has done with both incoming exchange and outgoing students. She has been integral in developing methods to better ensure the incoming exchange students transition to K-State well.

"Exchange students have the same challenges as local students, but they also have to adjust through language difficulties, homesickness and cultural differences," Holliday said. "Sara provides advising webinars before the students arrive on campus to assist with the application and course selection process, she meets them when they arrive and provides an orientation on campus to help the students feel welcome and connected to others at K-State, and she checks in throughout their semester to ensure that they are receiving the academic, student life, or emotional support they need."

In addition to working with incoming exchange students, Boro was also key in developing a First Time Travelers Workshop. This workshop helps to ease the fears and anxieties of K-State students going abroad for the first time. Boro also coordinated the Funding Education Abroad Week event, which offers sessions to help students prepare financially for going abroad.

"Sara is a valuable part of the advising community at K-STate and demonstrates that advising of students does not end with helping them select and enroll in their classes," Holliday said. "Having lived and worked abroad several times herself, Sara possesses empathy for the challenges both K-State and international students experience when studying abroad."

As a reminder, to nominate someone for the Charlie Award, fill out the short online form. Once your nomination is complete, it will remain an active nomination for one full academic year. Nominations are due by the 25th of each month and can be submitted by anyone on campus. One award will be given out at the beginning of each month. The Advisor Forum Committee will make the decision and deliver awards.
