Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama bring jazz, blues and gospel to McCain

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a Grammy Award-winning group will join together on the McCain Auditorium stage at Kansas State University for "Spirituals to Funk."

The McCain Performance Series presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. The performance features Dr. John, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Blind Boys of Alabama, a five-time Grammy Award-winning group.

The two acts have long relationship, with the Blind Boys featuring Dr. John on its Grammy-winning CD "Down in New Orleans." In addition to the McCain show, the Blind Boys are also set to appear on Dr. John's upcoming album, which celebrates jazz great Louis Armstrong's 100th birthday.

"Spirituals to Funk" features an integrated show that explores the connections among jazz, blues and gospel, and is based on Carnegie Hall's legendary "Spirituals to Swing" concerts, produced by John Hammond in the 1930s.

Tickets for "Spirituals to Funk" cost $18-$75 with applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, by phone at 785-532-6428, or online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain.
