Clive Fullagar

K-State Professor Clive Fullagar will present a gallery talk at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the the College of Architecture, Planning & Design's Cassias Gallery to go with his exhibit titled "5 Spaces."

A reception will follow the talk in the Shubert Lounge, across from the gallery. The exhibit is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through March 31. The event is fee and open to the public.

"As an organizational psychologist I have always been interested in how the spaces we work in shape the way we work," Fullagar said. "'5 Spaces' is an exhibition of five paintings depicting spaces in which art is viewed and made. Each painting looks at the intersection between art and architecture. These paintings explore three themes. The first is the way in which art and architecture merge when architecture becomes the predominant feature of the artwork. I am interested in using the pattern of architecture to create an abstract composition. The second theme relates to the interaction between the internal and external spaces of the building. The buildings in which we interact with art are designed to prevent the outside world from interfering with our appreciation of art while at the same time allowing us to be reminded of the cultural and historical context that has produced the art. The third theme that these paintings address is the illusory anomalies that occur when three-dimensional space is depicted on a two-dimensional surface. Features of the architecture, like glass and reflections, introduce spatial ambiguities that distort our perceptions of the space depicted, often confusing the distinction between figure and ground."
