Undergrad Award Winners

The Department of Economics hosted its annual awards banquet Friday, April 13, at the Bluemont Hotel.

The department honored its outstanding graduating seniors. Peri da Silva, associate professor of economics, received the Ed Bagley Award for Career Accomplishment in Research and Scholarship. Doctoral students Manaf Sellak, Mian Raza, Sakshi Bhardwaj, Elif Dilden and Jinwen Liao won awards for outstanding academic achievement. Atika Benaddi and Tennecia Dacass won the department's Graduate Student Teaching Award and Fidia Farah won the Best Graduate Student Paper Award.

The evening also was a celebration of achieving fundraising goals for scholarships. Working with the Department of Economics Advisory Council, the department recently set goals of raising $800,000 to endow undergraduate student scholarships and $500,000 to endow graduate student scholarships. President Richard Myers was the keynote speaker to help mark the achievement of these goals.

Inaugural council chair Jim Haymaker spoke about the partnership between the council, department, and K-State Foundation in raising funds and about the inspiring stories of K-State donors. Due to the generous support of donors, the department awarded 31 undergraduate scholarships this year and will soon offer 35 scholarships. Moreover, graduate student scholarships are being used to help attract top graduate students to the department.
