Science on Tap: Exploring firefighter health and fitness

Submitted by Michi Tobler

Held in a relaxed setting on the second or third Wednesday of the month — August through November — Science on Tap features a brief, informal presentation by a K-State scientist followed by lively conversation. The goal is to build our community's enthusiasm for science in a fun and unique way. Science on Tap is organized through a partnership with the Graduate School, the Center for Engagement and Community Development, Sunset Zoo and Tallgrass Tap House.

September's speaker is Brittany Hollerbach, a graduate research assistant in kinesiology at Kansas State University. Hollerbach's research focuses on tactical athletes including firefighters, military and police officers with a focus on health and wellness. Hollerbach's research is driven by her background in the fire service. After attending the regional fire academy in Kansas, Hollerbach became state certified as a firefighter/EMT and served as a volunteer firefighter for four years. Hollerbach also has her fire service instructor I certification and taught at a regional fire academy for six years before attending K-State.

Hollerbach is dedicated to bettering the lives of firefighters across the nation by increasing awareness and research regarding these important tactical athletes. Hollerbach completed her master's degree in kinesiology at K-State in December 2016. She is currently in the first year of her doctoral program in the kinesiology department.

The free, interactive program begins 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Tallgrass Tap House, 320 Poyntz Ave. Be sure to let the Tap House staff know you are there for Science on Tap.

Science on Tap is offered as part of Sunset Zoo's Behind the Science initiative; an effort to build our community's enthusiasm for science in a fun and unique way.
