Hamilton to give presentations at international conferences

Submitted by Teresa Zerbe

James Hamilton, professor of philosophy, will present "Acting as portraiture" at sixth Dubrovnik Conference on the Philosophy of Art, April 18-22, in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Despite the obvious differences between acting in narrative theatrical performances and portraiture in painting and photography, Hamilton presents a case for thinking of acting as the provision of "living portraits" of characters and, in presenting the case, makes use of current theories in philosophy of art on the nature of portraits and relies on a "display theory" of acting.

Hamilton also will attend the 12th Prague Interpretation Colloquium, April 24-26, which this year concerns "The Power of Analysis and the Impossibility of Understanding: Lessons from Kafka." Hamilton will present "Finding an audience" to the colloquium, in which he considers some ways in which Kafka's writings find an audience, using tools provided by Ted Cohen, Benno Wagner, and Elizabeth Costello (aka, J.M. Coetzee).
