Film Screening of 'FireSong': Refuse to be broken
The K-State Indigenous Alliance, Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art and the LGBT Resource Center invite the K-State campus community to view the Toronto International Film Festival Official Selection and the Imaginative Film Festival Audience Choice Award film, "Fire Song." The screening will be at 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the Beach Museum of Art.
One of the first films by a First Nations director to deal with two-spirited people, this thoughtful and moving debut feature by Adam Garnet Jones focuses on a young Anishinaabe who is forced to choose between staying in their community or exploring the expanded possibilities of the world outside of their First Nations home.
Shane must take care of their family following their sibling's suicide. Shane was supposed to move to the city for University in the fall and was trying to convince their secret boyfriend to come with them. But now everything is uncertain. Shane is torn between a family who needs him, and the promise of freedom in the city. Pushing through barrier after barrier, determined to take care of their mother and to follow their dreams. Shane has to choose between family or future.
