Legislative update

Submitted by Sue Peterson

The Kansas Legislature will return on Wednesday, April 27. The Legislature will consider any vetoes by the governor, work on legislation not passed in the regular session, an omnibus spending bill, and the Statewide Efficiency Report prepared by Alvarez and Marsal.

The Consensus Revenue Estimating Team met on April 20. The revisions for the State General Fund for fiscal years 2016 and 2017 were decreased by a combined $228.6 million. Details can be read in the memo released jointly by the Kansas Legislative Research Department and Kansas Division of the Budget.

The decrease in revenue requires the governor and the Legislature to balance the fiscal year 2016 and 2017 budgets. The governor presented three options to the Legislature to close the revenue shortfall. All three options are a cut to state universities. The governor's budget options can be found in the Governor's Budget Amendment.

Regular updates will be provided in K-State Today as the Legislature continues to meet. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Governmental Relations at 785-532-6227 or kstategr@k-state.edu.
