Submitted by Jennifer Rhodes

The Kansas State University Ecological Genomics Institute will host its 12th annual symposium Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 at the Marriott County Club Plaza in Kansas City.

The symposium, organized by a committee and led by co-directors Loretta Johnson and Michael Herman, will highlight renowned speakers from the United States, Canada and Germany. A select number of poster abstract submissions also were chosen for oral presentation and numerous posters will be showcased.

Speakers at this year's symposium include:
• Zac Cheviron, University of Illinois
• Cassandra Extravour, Harvard University
• Felicity Jones, Max Planck Institute, Tübingen, Germany
• Ari Jumpponen, Kansas State University
• Catherine Linnen, University of Kentucky
• Michael Lynch, Indiana University
• Sean Place, Sonoma Place University
• Jesse Poland, Kansas State University
• John Stinchcombe, University of Toronto
• Alex Wilson, University of Miami

Based in Kansas State University's Division of Biology, the Ecological Genomics Institute was established in 2003 with funding from the National Science Foundation and the K-State provost office's Targeted Excellence Program. Approximately 20 faculty from five distinct disciplines collaboratively research challenges in ecological genomics and work together to achieve the goals of the institute.

Institute scientists use funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other agencies in various research projects aimed at understanding the genomic basis of adaptive responses of organisms to their natural environment. This year's symposium was funded in part with a K-State Academic Excellence Award from the provost's office as well as a grant from the American Genetic Association that funded travel fellowships for students and postdoctoral associates.
