K-State senior speaks at Kansas Department of Health and Environment awards ceremony

Submitted by David Carter

Jacquelyn Sommers, senior in architectural engineering, provided acceptance remarks on behalf of the Coleman Company at an awards ceremony hosted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Aug. 10. The Coleman Company was selected to receive one of only two prevention pollutions awards given by the state's health and environment group at the 2016 Kansas Environmental Conference.

The award was based largely on research conducted by Sommers during her 2015 internship at the facility. While spending 11 weeks at the Coleman Company, Sommers researched energy and water efficiency associated with Rotovacs water reuse, compressed air, lighting, motors and heat mitigation, and identified potential savings of $280,000; 10 million gallons of water; 1.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity; and the equivalent of 2,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Partial implementation of these projects resulted in the Coleman Company being selected for the state pollution prevention award, so Coleman representatives invited Sommers to attend the award ceremony and provide remarks to the more than 300 people in attendance.
