Teresa Woods to present 'Fosters Wonder, Curiosity, and Evidence-Based Learning'

Submitted by Amanda Braun

The Kansas National Education Association-Student Program is having an exciting chapter meeting at 7:30 p.m. March 9 in 119 Bluemont Hall with prizes and professional development.

Teresa Woods, program manager in the Division of Biology, will be presenting "Fostering Wonder, Curiosity, and Evidence-Based Practices." This presentation will answer questions about the science standards and the future of science education.

Woods combines her experiences in K-12 education and as a biology researcher to focus on scientist-educator partnerships. She has brought scientists and teachers together for science education program and curriculum development at Kansas State University and the Botanical Society of America. She currently manages a program in K-State's Division of Biology that partners doctoral graduate fellows in the sciences with high school teachers at Junction City High School.

She provides professional development to in-service teachers in science education — elementary and secondary — and she is trained through the Kansas State Department of Education as a trainer for the Next Generation Science Standards. Her lifelong commitment to environmental education is reflected in her work, as is her dedication to providing STEM outreach and recruitment for under-represented groups.

She earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction in 2012 and her masters degree in biology in 2006 from Kansas State University; her Waldorf Education Teaching Certificate in 1992 from Emerson College in England; and her Bachelor of Arts in environmental education in 1988 from Prescott College in Arizona.

Also, this meeting will be an opportunity for you to learn about submitting nominations for officer positions for our local Kansas National Education Association-Student Program chapter. Officers will attend meetings and facilitate the improvement of the chapter through events and activities all while receiving valuable skills for teaching and hours to use towards the College of Education Requirements. Below is a list of the officer positions and duties.

Nominees will be asked to select an office to run for and will submit a short paragraph of interest in the position. Forms can be found online. Nominations are due by April 1.

K-State Kansas National Education Association-Student Program chapter members will vote for officers online through K-State Online and positions will be announced by April 6. Newly elected officers will be required to attend an officer meeting at 7:30 p.m. April 13. Please email ajbraun@k-state.edu if you have questions about becoming an officer.

Sunday, April 12, will be the annual Outreach To Teach service opportunity in Wamego where we will be improving Wamego school buildings.
