Rural Education Center Summer Programs

Summer Learning

The K-State Rural Education Center offers numerous summer learning experiences for middle- and high-school students. We understand how difficult it is to staff and program summer programs for your schools. Our mission is to ensure rural schools can offer high-quality summer classes (primarily in STEAM topics) to their students at low or no cost.

LEAPES Virtual Academy

Supported by a grant from the Department of Defense - NDEP Program, the LEAPES Virtual Academy is offered over three weeks in June. It takes place in a hybrid format, with instruction coming from K-State via Zoom to your local classrooms, where a facilitating teacher will work directly with students. By participating, schools are eligible to receive over $4000 of classroom equipment (drones, robots) that can be kept and used in future classes and a $1000 teaching stipend. Classes are offered in three emerging STEM areas: Computer Science, Aerospace/Drones, and Artificial Intelligence/Robotics.

KU STEM Camps

Over four different sessions in June and July, our partners at the University of Kansas Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) will provide short courses to current sophomores and juniors in high schools completely FREE OF CHARGE. Housing and dining is included. Students will attend the session of their choice and receive college-level instruction in Math, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence, all while getting the college student experience of living in a dorm and making new friends.

Summer STEAM Virtual Academy

The Summer STEAM Virtual Academy is offered in June each year by the K-State College of Education. We want to take the stress of planning summer curriculum and teaching off of your shoulders. Classes take place in a hybrid format, with the instruction coming from Zoom and facilitators in the physical classroom at your school. The Academy is totally self-sufficient through the College, and a small fee of $100 for three weeks of instruction will be accessed to cover the cost of our instructors.

The course offerings are diverse for the Summer STEAM Academy. STEAM topics (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) are available and your district will be able to choose your programming week-by-week.

Individual student enrollment is also available.
