Verification
Federal verification process
Verification is a process required by the U.S. Department of Education to ensure the accuracy of the information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The verification process requires our office to verify or confirm certain data elements reported by you and/or your parents on your FAFSA. The U.S. Department of Education uses a risk model to determine which FAFSAs will be selected for verification and which data elements will be verified.
If you are selected for verification, the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) will inform you of the necessary documentation required.
The verification process is not complete and federal financial aid will not be awarded or disbursed until all required documentation has been received and verified by OSFA, and the U.S. Department of Education has received and accepted any changes to the FAFSA data.
How do I view my outstanding verification requirements?
Review your outstanding requirements on your KSIS student page.
Step 1: Add image of student KSIS home page with arrow directing to student page
Step 2: Add image of student page with arrow directing to the student’s checklist item section.
How do I prepare and submit my documents?
- Once you have reviewed your outstanding requirements, you can select the requirement to view the complete instruction to satisfy the task.
- Avoid making corrections to your FAFSA unless directed. We will make changes on your behalf.
- Submit your completed forms using our Secure Document Upload.
Tips for success?
- Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA. Fewer applications are selected for verification if the IRS Data Retrieval Tool is used, and the data is not altered after being imported.
- Need a copy of your tax forms? You can request a tax return transcript or non-filer letter from the IRS.
- Submit documents as soon as possible. Since the FAFSA uses ‘prior-prior’ year tax information, almost all applicants will have actual income information available to use when completing the FAFSA and be able to provide a copy to the financial aid office, if requested.
- Be as accurate as possible; incomplete submissions extend the process
