Research Interests
I received my master’s degree in Medical Physics from the University of Guanajuato (Mexico) in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US. I completed a Ph.D. in Applied Physics at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico, and a second Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at Aalto University, Finland. After spending some time at the University of Oslo in Norway, I moved to the US and worked as a postdoctoral fellow and then as a Research Scientist at Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, US. I joined the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kansas State University in 2023.
My research interests include cognitive and computational neuroscience, brain stimulation, neuroimaging, brain modeling, and signal analysis processing. I have an international reputation in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with electroencephalography (EEG). In my research, I use TMS to probe the human brain and EEG to record the causal brain activity induced by TMS. I also work with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and peripheral electrical stimulation.
My research aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying human brain connectivity and develop novel approaches to induce neuroplasticity. I conduct both basic and clinical research, with a particular interest in motor and language disorders. I also focus on developing new therapies for post-stroke patients and individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Currently, I serve as an editor for the reputable Brain Stimulation journal.
