K-State visited Shawnee County and Topeka on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023. The visit included a day of activities to engage with, listen to and learn from Kansans in Topeka and the Shawnee County region.

Community open forum

Everyone is invited to attend this community event, where President Richard Linton and K-State students will host a dialogue about university and community connections and the student experience. A focus will be on the future of enhancing the successful partnerships and positive relationships with and between communities in the Shawnee County region.

The Shawnee County visit included additional activities with community leaders, organizations and partners throughout the day. There were community conversations, events to highlight university partnerships and K-State Research and Extension relationships, and recruitment activities.

K-State 105: Learning together to advance Kansas communities and businesses
10:30-11:45 a.m.
Greater Topeka Partnership, St. Francis Boardroom

Take part in a facilitated conversation about the newly launched K-State 105, which is a community and business advancement initiative that works with partners across the state. GO Topeka is an early partner in the initiative. Learn more and participate in a discussion with GO Topeka, NetWork Kansas, K-State Research and Extension and other local business and community leaders.

Lunch panel: Filling classrooms with quality teachers
12:15-1:45 p.m.

With Kansas experiencing teacher shortages across the state, a panel of educators will discuss pathways and pipelines to fill Kansas classrooms with quality teachers.

Mobile Access Partnership (MAP): Taking comprehensive services to the unsheltered homeless through innovative multi-agency collaboration
2:15-3:30 p.m.

Learn about a unique approach to combatting homelessness and see multiple mobile units all designed to take comprehensive services to the unsheltered homeless. Hear from agency experts about their comprehensive game plan to help vulnerable individuals exit homelessness. The Mobile Access Partnership consists of these key providers: TRM Ministries, The Street Dog Coalition, K-State College of Veterinary Medicine, Shawnee County Health Department, Stormont Vail Health, Topeka Police Department Community Outreach and Valeo Behavioral Health Care.

Service activity: Local food security
5:30-7:30 p.m.
Harvesters Topeka facility
215 SE Quincy, Topeka

The K-State team will volunteer with Harvesters Community Food Network and address food insecurity in the Greater Topeka community. Volunteers will sort and repack food with the Volunteer Engagement Center, which is part of Harvesters' mission to mobilize the power of community to create equitable food access.
