What is Peer Advising?
Peer Advising is a student-to-student resource designed to help you explore your academic, major, and career options in a supportive environment.
Peer Advisors are trained K-State students who understand what it's like to navigate uncertainty, ask questions, and explore different possibilities. Through conversation, reflection, and campus resources, Peer Advisors help students learn more about themselves, identify next steps, and connect with opportunities across campus.
Whether you're exploring majors, considering future careers, or thinking through course options, Peer Advisors are here to guide the conversation and help you feel more confident in your decisions.
Peer Advisors do not make decisions for students. Instead, they help students reflect on their interests, strengths, values, and goals while connecting them with the appropriate resources and professionals when needed.
What Peer Advisors Do Not Do:
Peer Advisors are here to guide, support, and connect students with resources. However, Peer Advisors do not:
- Lift advising holds
- Enroll students in courses
- Select majors for students
- Tell students what career to pursue
- Build or approve academic plans
- Replace meetings with academic advisors
- Make academic decisions on behalf of students
Instead, Peer Advisors help students:
- Reflect on their interests, strengths, and values
- Explore options and possibilities
- Learn about campus resources
- Prepare questions for academic advisors
- Develop confidence in making informed decisions
Types of Appointments:
Explore potential careers and discover how your interests, strengths, values, and skills connect to future opportunities.
Career Exploration appointments help students begin thinking about life after graduation and identify possible career pathways. During these appointments, Peer Advisors may utilize the Focus2 Career Assessment to help students reflect on their interests, personality, values, and work preferences.
Students can discuss:
- Career interests and possibilities
- Focus2 Career Assessment results
- Career pathways connected to majors
- Professional goals and aspirations
- Campus resources that support career development
Recommended for students who are unsure what career path they would like to pursue or want to learn more about careers related to their interests.
Explore academic pathways and discover majors that align with your interests, strengths, and goals.
Major Exploration appointments provide students with an opportunity to discuss different academic programs available at K-State. Peer Advisors help students reflect on what they enjoy, what motivates them, and what they hope to achieve through their college experience.
Students can discuss:
- Potential major options
- Academic interests and strengths
- How majors connect to careers
- Major requirements and curriculum differences
- Resources to support the exploration process
Recommended for students who are undecided, considering a major change, or wanting to learn more about available academic programs.
Discuss course options and academic pathways as you prepare for enrollment, make changes to your schedule, and gain confidence in your academic decisions.
Course Exploration appointments help students think through course choices and make informed enrollment decisions. Peer Advisors can assist students with understanding course options, comparing classes, exploring electives, discussing degree requirements, and navigating schedule adjustments. They also help students' draft emails to professors regarding class permissions, prerequisite questions, or waitlist opportunities.
Students can discuss:
- Adding, dropping, or swapping courses
- Degree requirements and curriculum pathways
- Elective options
- Comparing course choices
- Questions about prerequisites or course expectations
- Drafting emails to professors regarding permissions or waitlist opportunities
- Academic interest related to course selection
- Questions to discuss with their academic advisor
Recommended for students who have already met with their academic advisor and would like additional support navigating course options, enrollment decisions, or schedule adjustments before their designated enrollment window.
