Skateboard Regulations
Staying safe while skateboarding is essential to prevent injuries, which can vary from minor cuts and sprains to serious head trauma, broken bones and even fatalities. Skateboarding involves moving quickly over hard surfaces, making falls and collisions common occurrences. However, adhering to safety measures, such as wearing helmets and protective pads, is crucial. Additionally, it’s important to remain visible while skating on campus. To enhance visibility, always wear bright or reflective clothing. This will help ensure that you are seen both during the day and at night.
Guidelines and Rules
These guidelines have been established to promote safety and raise awareness among skaters and skateboarders on the K-State campus. The use of in-line skates and skateboards is permitted on university pathways designated for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Skateboarding may be used for individual transportation in university bike lanes.
However, skating and skateboarding are prohibited on buildings, rails, steps, retaining walls, landscape walls, benches, handrails and similar structures. All skaters and skateboarders must adhere to safety rules and yield the right of way to pedestrians and vehicles at all times. Cautious use of skates and skateboards is mandatory on campus. Additionally, skating and skateboarding are not allowed inside any university buildings.
Skating and Disciplinary Consequences
If a skater or skateboarder breaks the guidelines or rules, there will be consequences. Violators may have their skate equipment impounded by an officer for a period not exceeding five days, and a receipt will be issued to the owner or user. If you are visiting K-State, you may be required to remove your skates or stop using your skateboard and leave university property.
For repeat offenders, skateboards may be confiscated, a trespass warning may be issued and arrest is a possibility. Any authorized agent of K-State can ask you to leave the area if you are violating these guidelines. Authorized agents include building managers, deans, department heads and directors, maintenance and grounds personnel, as well as officers of the K-State Police Department.
