Register now for the 16th annual community luncheon from K-State's Johnson Cancer Research Center

An annual Kansas State University luncheon will give community members an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, learn more about cancer research and explore ways to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

The Johnson Cancer Research Center's 16th annual "The Cure Starts with Us" Power Luncheon is Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Hilton Garden Inn Conference Center in Manhattan.

Doors open at 11 a.m. for an educational expo featuring health resources and community exhibitors. A buffet lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon.

Build connections rooted in hope at 'The Cure Starts with Us' luncheon

This year's luncheon theme, "The Cure Starts with Us: Together for a Brighter Tomorrow," reflects the importance of bringing people together to advance cancer research, encourage prevention and awareness, and support people affected by cancer.

The program features two speakers:

  • Tara Claycamp, a cancer survivor, advocate, inspirational speaker and Manhattan business owner, will share her personal story and discuss how she is making an impact in the community.
  • Gina Besenyi, associate professor in the School of Health Sciences and director of K-State's Physical Activity Research in Community Settings Laboratory, will share the latest information about the Walking in Nature and Nutrition, or WINN, project. WINN is developing an evidence-based, community-informed toolkit to help cancer survivors across Kansas improve their well-being through physical activity, practical nutrition education and time in nature. Developed with input from cancer survivors and K-State Extension professionals, the project aims to expand access to practical resources and strengthen support for rural cancer survivors.

Attendees can visit educational exhibits, connect with health professionals and community organizations, enjoy lunch and participate in door-prize activities. The luncheon provides a welcoming space to recognize survivors, celebrate the people who support them and learn how individuals can contribute to a brighter future for cancer research.

"We look forward to bringing our community together for a day filled with hope, encouragement and meaningful connections," said Ryan Rafferty, interim director of the K-State Johnson Cancer Research Center. "This luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to honor cancer survivors, learn about research that can improve lives and discover the many ways each of us can help make a difference. Every story matters, every act of support counts, and together, we can help move cancer research forward."
