Why burn?

Researchers study prescribed burning at Konza Prairie Biological Station

Why would scientists intentionally set fire to the prairie?

At the Konza Prairie Biological Station, Kansas State University researchers use prescribed burns to study and preserve one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in North America. Fire is a natural and essential part of prairie ecology, helping maintain healthy grasslands, prevent woody plant encroachment, and support biodiversity.

With prescribed burns, researchers can better understand the relationship between fire, grazing, climate, soil health and ecosystem resilience.

Through decades of long-term ecological research, Konza Prairie has become a globally recognized outdoor laboratory for studying how prairies respond to environmental change.
