K-State Libraries honors 2026 Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award recipients

The Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award honors undergraduate students at Kansas State University whose research is strengthened by the resources and support of K-State Libraries.

Grand prize awards were distributed across three categories: individual non-freshman undergraduate student, group project and continued research. Each individual category winner received $1,500, and group project winners shared a $3,000 prize. Honorable mentions received $100 each.

In the group research category, the grand prize was awarded for the project “The Salk Institute: A Case Study on Environmental Effects in Architectural Design,” completed for ARCH 248: Fundamentals of Architecture. Group members included Jack Garcia, junior in architecture, Humble, Texas; and Grayson Yoder, junior in architecture and German international studies, Olathe.

The following students were recognized as individual grand prize recipients:

  • Lei Zhong, senior in bakery science and management, Jingzhou, China, received the grand prize in the continued research category for his project, “Study on the Application of Olive Pomace as a Partial Replacement for Cocoa Powder in Muffins,” completed for GRSC 637: Baking Science 2.
  • Eva Naab, senior in political science, Overland Park, received the grand prize in the non-freshman category for her project, “Consistent With Public Interest? Ordinary Americans and the Unravelling of the Embargo of 1807,” completed for HIST 586: Advanced History Seminar.

The following student received an honorable mention:

  • Aliyah Herring, sophomore in secondary English education, Topeka, received honorable mention in the non-freshman category for her project, “How Teachers Can Use Writing Center Pedagogy in the Classroom: Helping Our ELL Students, completed for ENGL 500: Writing Center Theory and Practice.
