Safely dispose of unused medications at Lafene Health Center

A building awning with the sign "LAFENE HEALTH CENTER" juts out over a driveway.

Lafene Health Center provides an easily accessible, safe place to dispose of unused and expired medications year-round.

Lafene Health Center provides the university community with a secure, convenient way to dispose of unused and expired medications. The Consumer Drug Take Back Bin, located in the pharmacy lobby, is available year-round during Lafene’s regular business hours — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Proper medication disposal helps prevent misuse and protects the environment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 220 Americans die every day from drug overdoses, and many misused prescription pain relievers come from friends or relatives.

The Take Back Bin can be used for:

  • Unused or expired prescription medication, including Schedule II-V controlled substances.
  • Unused or expired over-the-counter medication.
  • Pet medication.

The Take Back Bin cannot be used for:

  • Schedule I controlled substances.
  • Illegal drugs.
  • Thermometers.
  • Aerosol cans.
  • Inhalers.
  • Needles.
  • Lotions/liquids.
  • Hydrogen peroxide.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will take place Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025. The nationwide initiative, organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration, promotes safe and anonymous disposal of unused or expired prescription medications.

Lafene Health Center supports this effort by providing a year-round collection site for the K-State community.
