K-State TRIO programs continue decades of student success
For more than 50 years, Kansas State University's TRIO programs have provided first-generation and income-eligible students, as well as students with disabilities, with the tools, connections and encouragement they need to succeed in higher education.
Educational Supportive Services, or ESS, on the Manhattan campus and Student Support Services, or SSS, at K-State Salina are part of Student Belonging in the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs and are led by Mirta Chavez, assistant vice president for student belonging. Together, the two TRIO programs serve hundreds of students each year through academic advising, tutoring, financial literacy education, peer mentoring and wellness support.
Founded in 1972 by K-State alumnus Veryl Switzer, ESS has been a cornerstone of student support for more than five decades. SSS, established in 2001, has become a vital resource for Salina students navigating their college experience.
"TRIO has helped me maneuver through the college red tape," said Nadeen, a non-traditional returning student. "The psychological support has been immense."
Geralyn Tracz, TRIO ESS program associate, and other TRIO staff members see the daily impact of these programs firsthand.
"I see students walk in our office for appointments, with questions or concerns, and sometimes just to take a break and chat between classes," Tracz said. "Making even one connection is vital for success on campus."
Scott Velasquez is a longtime TRIO staff member who has seen for nearly two decades how the programs have affected students on campus.
"I've worked in TRIO for a total of 19 years because I get to be a part of the solution," Velasquez said. "For over 50 years, K-State TRIO has made a difference in the lives of thousands of students."
Life-changing support
For students, the benefits go beyond academics. Julia Lehew, junior in human development and family science, is a first-generation college student from a small town.
When she was overwhelmed her freshman year, she said TRIO helped her understand what students with multiple generations of college attendees in their families already knew and understood. In their first meeting, the TRIO team talked with Lehew about her goals and expectations for herself.
"Following my path, with their help, has allowed me to prepare to graduate this spring, in just three years — a full year sooner than expected," Lehew said. "I know without TRIO's help, I would not have had an easy transition into college, nor made friends who come from a similar situation."
