The English department in the College of Arts and Sciences is offering a new online microcredential in Writing with AI this fall.

Composed of three stackable one-credit courses, the microcredential provides guided, hands-on experience with generative artificial intelligence, or AI, for learners with varying familiarity with AI tools. Topics include prompt engineering, writing for multiple audiences and contexts, document and image creation, responsible use of AI tools, writing with personal style and voice, and even creating a custom bot.

Learners can register for the first microcredential course for fall 2025, and those who complete all three one-credit courses will earn a badge. The first course, ENGL 312: Writing with AI: Fundamentals of Generative AI Literacy, is open to all without prerequisite; the second and third courses require successful completion of the first. Each course runs for four weeks and will be offered in the fall, spring and summer.

The Writing with AI microcredential was designed by Cydney Alexis, associate professor in English, and Theresa Merrick, senior instructor in English and assistant director of the Writing Center.

Alexis and Merrick received support from the Office of the Provost and its Academic Innovation Fund and from the Office of the Vice President for Research and its 2024 GRIPex Awards.

Visit the Writing with AI microcredential site for more information and to enroll for the inaugural for-credit offering in September 2025. A noncredit offering will be available later this year.
