Graduate Assistantship

The graduate student for the Military Affiliated Resource Center (M.A.R.C.) ensures excellent customer service to the military affiliated population on campus and nurtures relationships with university and community partners. This position supports the mission and goals under the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs (DASSA) to best serve the military affiliated population and all students at K-State. In support of the development of the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at K-State, the Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) will work with entities across campus and at a local and national level to provide guidance and resources for Veterans and their families. They will analyze and report data and information related to military affiliated, manage communications about the M.A.R.C. for events and programming, and help maintain an inclusive and welcoming space. Through collaboration they develop, plan, support, and coordinate events for community building and camaraderie for military affiliated prospective and current students. The work of this position is enriched by theories related to student development and adult education, and data analysis.

About the Center and Program

The Military Affiliated Resource Center (MARC) nurtures the academic, personal, and professional growth of all military affiliated students, including student veterans, active-duty, reserve, National Guard, retirees, children and spouses of those who serve/d, and Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Our program collaborates with other offices and programs at the university, helping military affiliated students connect with services and resources, as well as communicating the value that our military population brings to the campus and the greater community. Located in the Student Union, the M.A.R.C. is the physical space on K-State main campus dedicated to military affiliated students. The center is where the program operates from and houses its services and amenities to serve the diverse and dynamic needs of our population.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in 6 credit hours or more.
  • Prior knowledge of military service and culture, benefits, and various higher education systems (or willingness to learn).
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to relate easily and communicate effectively to a variety of people across cultural boundaries
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and discuss sensitive information with discretion and tact- including completing FERPA training
  • Must be able to multitask and manage multiple events concurrently
  • Must be able to problem solve and delegate tasks effectively
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and independent worker with a positive attitude with the ability to analyze information and respond appropriately on a case-by-case basis while working in a team environment

Pay and Benefits

  • $9,890 per year ($11.25 hourly) + Insurance yearly for the academic year
  • 20 hours/week - Flexible. Some evening, weekend, and remote work/ events may be required.
  • Does not include tuition remission.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative: Complete purchase orders, budgeting, IT requests, marketing content including brochures, flyers, and other postings.
  • Campus Support: Serve as liaison to academic departments, student services, and instructional faculty for military affiliated inquiries. Support the greater campus initiatives with information sharing, tabling, and guidance at events including Family Day, K-State Open House, Week of Welcome, transfer visit days, and orientation and enrollment days.
  • Communication: Assist with the maintenance of the M.A.R.C. web pages, answer phone and email communication, and social media. Reinforce student code of conduct and community guidelines. Refer students to campus and community resources.
  • Customer Service: Provide information to prospective and enrolled students, faculty/staff, and visitors, concerning admissions, enrollment, housing, academic success, financial assistance, health care and insurance, campus activities, community programs, career information, student networking, etc. Refer individuals to other campus offices, resources, and services as needed. Refer students to off campus resources as appropriate.
  • Data Analytics: Assist with the compilation of data related to military-affiliated students at K-State in support of the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success grant. Perform and support qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyze and measure effectiveness.
  • Finances and Benefits: Share accurate and timely information for accessing Federal VA and DOD education benefits, including scholarships. Support VA certifying officials with regards to answering questions, preparing and processing documents, and referring students in accordance with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official Handbook.
  • Belonging: Support the coordination of events and programming such as Military Affiliated Graduation Celebration, Lunch and Learns, and other programming needs such as K-State Military and Veterans Campus Visit Days, Ft. Riley Days, Veteran’s Day, and other military-affiliated recruitment/retention student activities.
  • Programming and Events: Coordinate events and programmatic efforts for the M.A.R.C by reserving locations, creating and maintaining project organizers, utilizing Org Central, capturing information and communicating efforts.
  • Research: Will conduct research specifically supporting the efforts of military affiliated subjects that can potentially provide multi-discipline collaboration and networking.
  • Supervision: Supervise and assist with hiring, onboarding, training, payroll, and coordination of VA-funded Work-Study student staff.
  • Other duties as assigned
