| From the invention of the printing press, which set the stage for the Protestant Reformation, to AI’s ability to generate photorealistic (deepfake) images and videos, the cultural and historical impacts of emergent technologies have often gone overlooked. | Beyond completing required classes, what else do you want to get from your time at K-State? In this course, you'll explore possible careers, see what employers are actually looking for, and discover opportunities including internships, research, education abroad, leadership, student organizations, service and more. You’ll create a personalized plan for experiences you want to pursue during college—and consider why they matter for where you want to go next. Not sure what you want to do after college yet? That’s okay. This course will help you explore that too. Note: this section is the second 8 weeks of the semester. | |||||||

| Sec | Number | Type | Units | Days | Hours | Facility | Instructor |
| D | 17494 | SEM | 1 | W | 10:30 - 11:20 | Boyd 004 | Kastner |
| 19th-century discoveries in microbiology, epidemiology, and public health coincided with literary innovations (e.g., Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes) and real-life dramas (including the likes of Jack the Ripper). Three of Britain’s Victorian-era cities—Edinburgh, Liverpool, and London— provided colorful contexts in which public health leaders (including physicians, veterinarians, and medical officers of health) began to sort out (and set aside) professional differences for larger societal goals. Students will meet memorable figures who had a hand in late 19th-century advancements in human medicine, veterinary public health, food safety, and the "One Health" philosophy. | |||||||

| Historical and cultural documents provide insight into our world. But what if we can’t read them? During this class, we'll explore historical documents and artefacts that may include handwritten letters, photographs, maps, and even physical objects. Our goal will be to make sense of them by asking questions and learning how to find answers for those questions. We will jointly explore items through in-class and out-of-class activities. Students in any major will be able to apply their experience reading cultural documents to future research. | |||||||

Description: we will focus on literary and cinematic representations of spies and the ethical and psychological implications of spying. Some of the key skills you'll learn in this course are similar to some of the terms and practices associated with spying: we decipher and decode texts and collect information from indirect and typically unreliable sources. We will read texts that cover a broad range of literary styles, from non-fiction news reports and memoirs, and fiction in the form of novels and short stories. We will also discuss cinnematic representations of spies and spying. These texts and movies will allow us to examine the formal and ethical strategies used by individual authors and directors. Our goals include the development of techniques of literary analysis and the translation of these techniques into writing skills |
