Applied Learning for Students
K-State is committed to providing all degree-seeking students with Applied Learning Experiences. These opportunities ensure every student is applying what they learn in the classroom in meaningful, deep, and involved ways throughout their path to degree completion.
What is Applied Learning?
K-State defines Applied Learning as: "An educational approach that involves an ongoing cycle of purposeful experience, intentional observation and critical reflection. Students apply knowledge and skills gained from academic learning to practical settings, projects, research and creative activities. The learner develops new understanding and then applies it to new situations."
Through Applied Learning Experiences, students take ownership over their learning by setting learning goals, practicing skills, working with mentors, and reflecting on what they've learned.
What is an Applied Learning Experience?
Below are six ways to participate in Applied Learning at K-State:
Students may choose to engage in experiences beyond these six. Eplore the ALE Framework to learn more about what you can expect from your experiences.
Why is Applied Learning important?
Applied Learning Experiences provide structures and support to students as they take their classroom learning into practical settings. These experiences are proven to help students gain confidence and clarity in their degree path, increase a sense of belonging, and ultimately set them up for success in their careers.
Applied Learning Experiences, along with other High Impact Practices, are proven to increase rates of retention. For example, a study from Utah Valley University showed that adult learners were 58% more likely to be retained after completing a global learning experience, and 115% more likely to be retained after a service (or communiy-engaged) learning experience.
