Applied learning experiences exist throughout K-State, and likely include more opportunities than are reflected. The six experiences were selected as they are readily available to learners across disciplines, and are proven effective educational practices. The Applied Learning teams and campus partners are working to resource and scale these opportunities, increasing access.

Students may also participate in experiences not represented by these 6, so long as they meet the requirements in the framework.

An inventory process is underway to learn more about existing applied learning experiences and discover opportunities for expansion. Applied Learning deeply relies on learners taking ownership over their experiences. Instructors will be invaluable in creating environments conducive to Applied Learning Experiences, but ultimately, learners are responsible for ensuring framework elements are met.

Applied Learning teams are working to make these experiences the new norm. We hope to empower instructors and advocate for resources with the end goal of applied learning being so integrated, students can’t help but to experience it. To ensure that each undergraduate student completes an experience, a sub-committee within the University Steering Committee for Applied Learning Experiences (USCALE) is working to generate a graduation requirement which will impact incoming students in fall 2026.

Feedback from the university community will be integral in the implementation of this requirement. Open forums and surveys will be available to students, faculty, and staff as this work progresses.

Our team is considering multiple mechanisms for tracking student participation and completion. A conclusion has not yet been reached, but the decision will include consideration of several factors:

• Accessibility for instructors
• Ease of access for academic advisors
• Utilization of a pre-existing system
• Sustainable systematic implementation
• Translation of impact to employers

Yes. K-State has a strong tradition of connecting students to applied learning experiences and many already participate in one or more experiences. We hope that through intentional development of new experiences and proactive efforts to address barriers, students will have increased access.

The early planning for this initiative includes consideration of barriers, such as access to financial resources. As the program is established, there are options to help address financial concerns, such as financial assistance and integrating applied learning in degree programs.

As the phrase implies, any student who seeks a degree from Kansas State University will have the opportunity to engage in an applied learning experience. This includes those enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Manhattan, Salina, Olathe, and online.

Manhattan, Salina, Olathe, graduate, and online learners have been part of this initiative from the beginning and are represented on our USCALE and Ambassador teams. A phased approach will allow the time and attention to be inclusive of faculty, staff, and administrators who are best positioned to identify and expand meaningful applied learning experiences for all learners.
