Hampton to keynote seventh Carl R. Ice College of Engineering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Summit

Submitted by Grant Guggisberg

The Multicultural Engineering Program student advisory board, Engineering Student Council and the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering have partnered to host the seventh Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Summit from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in 1109 Engineering Hall.

Cynthia Hampton, postdoctoral research fellow for the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity, or CEED, at Virginia Tech, will serve as the event's keynote speaker.

Hampton, a 2011 K-State graduate with a bachelor's in biological systems engineering, assists in developing grant and research proposals that link the practice-based initiatives in CEED to research and impact-based funding strategies, at the local and regional scale. Prior to returning to Virginia Tech, Hampton, served more than three years as a lead research associate for the Center for STEM Learning and the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Hampton has co-led collegewide transformational change efforts in the evaluation of engineering faculty teaching responsibilities for promotion and tenure, directed summer bridge programs for incoming undergraduates in engineering and led peer support initiatives for minoritized groups. Her research has included agency and narrative in faculty experiences of broadening participation, why students leave or stay in engineering and why change does and does not occur.

In addition to the keynote address, the evening will feature a Q&A with Hampton and breakout sessions. Students, faculty and staff must RSVP to attend.
