Reflecting on Title IX: 50 years of anti-discrimination protection and counting

Submitted by Tresa Landis

The Manhattan branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW, invites you to a panel discussion of Title IX at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 10, in the auditorium of the Manhattan Public Library, 629 Poyntz Ave.

AAUW has assembled a panel of K-State administrators and student-athletes to speak on the impact of Title IX. Jill Shields, K-State deputy athletics director, will moderate the discussion.

Featured panel members are Ayoka Lee, senior and All-American center for the K-State women’s basketball team; Amy Garman, professor of accounting in the College of Business Administration and professional runner; local branch member Mary Stamey, who played on the first intercollegiate women’s basketball team at K-State in the late 1960s; and Kristin Waller, deputy Title IX coordinator with K-State Athletics.

Title IX is part of the Education Amendments of 1972 and is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education. The federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance. Title IX applies to all participants of such programs, including students, parents and faculty and staff members.

The public is invited to attend. No reservation is necessary.

AAUW's mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy. The Manhattan branch has actively worked toward these goals for over a century. K-State is an AAUW college/university partner and offers free e-student affiliate memberships to K-State undergraduate students.
