Faculty and staff assistance sought for Three Minute Thesis competition

Submitted by Megan Miller

K-State's annual Three Minute Thesis, or 3MT, competition is less than a month away. Eighty-five students have registered for the event, which is the largest participation since starting the competition in 2016.

The Graduate School is calling for faculty, staff and postdoc volunteers to assist with this year's competition in one of two ways. Research experience and previous experience with the Three Minute Thesis competition are not required.

  • Volunteers are needed to serve as mock judges in practice sessions with 3MT presenters. Mock judges will provide feedback to help presenters strengthen their presentations for the competition. Practice sessions are scheduled for Jan. 24, 27 and 30 and Feb. 1.
  • Volunteers are also needed to serve as judges in the first round of competition on Feb. 8. Heats for the first round will occur throughout the day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The time commitment for judges will be 1-1.5 hours.

The Three Minute Thesis competition is an academic competition that challenges graduate students to present a compelling oration on their thesis/dissertation topic and its significance to a non-expert audience in just three minutes using a single, static slide. The competition is an exciting way to learn about and celebrate the important work being conducted by K-State graduate students.

If you are interested in assisting with a practice session or serving as a 3MT judge, please complete a brief form to indicate your interest and availability.

Mark your calendar for the 3MT final competition scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the K-State Alumni Center Banquet Room.

Questions about the 3MT may be directed to Megan Miller, Graduate School student success coordinator, at mmmiller@k-state.edu
